G-funk

swaggeringwarmhypnotic90–100 BPM

West Coast funk-rap with whining synth leads and deep bass.

History

G-funk, short for gangsta funk, grew out of West Coast gangsta rap in the early 1990s and took its sound from the synthesizer-heavy 1970s funk of Parliament-Funkadelic. The formula is slow and heavy: deep bass, hypnotic grooves, layered melodic synthesizers, female backing vocals and a high, whining portamento lead, with a slurred, laid-back rap delivery on top. Rather than stacking many samples, Dr. Dre usually had live musicians replay the old funk parts, so the result sounded like his own. The whine has a traceable ancestor: the squealing synth solo from Ohio Players' Funky Worm, which Dre sampled on N.W.A tracks in 1987 and 1988. Dre is usually named as the originator, though Cold 187um of Above the Law has claimed the sound as his. The breakout came with The Chronic in 1992, later chosen for the National Recording Registry, followed by Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle, which debuted at number one, Ice Cube's It Was a Good Day and Warren G's Regulate. Houston even had a small G-funk scene of its own, with the Geto Boys and Scarface among its artists. By the end of the decade it had faded from the mainstream, and Dre's 1999 album 2001 was noted for moving away from G-funk to something more gothic and string-heavy.
