History
A military family kept Khalid Robinson moving. He was born in Fort Stewart, Georgia, lived on bases in Kentucky and in Germany, and finished high school in El Paso, Texas. "Location" was written and recorded while he was still a student there, uploaded in 2016, and spread through SoundCloud and blogs long before radio noticed it. American Teen arrived on RCA in the spring of 2017, went multi-platinum, and brought several Grammy nominations the following year, Best New Artist among them. His second album, Free Spirit, went to number one on the Billboard 200 in 2019. Between the two he was everywhere as a guest voice: "Silence" with Marshmello, "Love Lies" with Normani, "Eastside" with Benny Blanco and Halsey, "1-800-273-8255" with Logic and Alessia Cara. The voice sits low and slightly nasal, recorded with a lot of air around it. Arrangements stay thin: muted synth pads, restrained drums, tempos that almost never push. El Paso and teenage boredom are subjects in the songs, not background colour.
