History
Charlie Puth is a pop craftsman who does his own production, and his records are unusually clean because of it. He came up posting covers online, trained as a musician rather than as a personality, and the training shows in the chord movement: his songs modulate and resolve in ways ordinary radio pop avoids, while still landing a hook in the first fifteen seconds. See You Again, recorded with Wiz Khalifa for a Fast and Furious film, made him a household name on the strength of a piano figure and a plain melody. Attention is the better demonstration of what he actually does, a bassline carrying the whole arrangement while the vocal sits in a tight falsetto above it. We Don't Talk Anymore uses space the same way, almost nothing in the mix and a hook that never lets up. He has spent years pulling his own tracks apart on camera, explaining a chord choice or a vocal chop, and that habit has made him a producer other writers watch as much as a singer listeners follow.
