History
E-40, born Earl Tywone Stevens on November 15, 1967, in Vallejo, California, is a pioneering figure of Bay Area hip hop. He began performing in 1986 with a family group that evolved into the Click, alongside his brother D-Shot, sister Suga-T, and cousin B-Legit. In the late 1980s he sold self-recorded tapes out of his car trunk while founding his own label, Sick Wid It Records. His solo debut, Federal, appeared in 1993, and the single "Captain Save a Hoe" led Jive Records to sign him in 1994. His major-label debut, In a Major Way (1995), went platinum, followed by gold albums Tha Hall of Game (1996) and The Element of Surprise (1998). Working with producer Lil Jon, E-40 broke into the mainstream with 2006's "Tell Me When to Go" and the gold album My Ghetto Report Card. Known for an inventive slang vocabulary extensive enough to fill its own lexicon, he has released 27 studio albums and later guested on Big Sean's multi-platinum "I Don't Fuck with You."
