History
Above the Law formed in 1989 in Pomona, California, built around rapper Cold 187um (Gregory Hutchison), fellow MC KMG the Illustrator (Kevin Gulley), and DJs Go Mack (Arthur Goodman) and Total K-Oss (Anthony Stewart). Signed to Eazy-E's Ruthless Records the same year, the group released its debut, Livin' Like Hustlers, on February 20, 1990, executive-produced by Eazy-E with production help from Dr. Dre and a guest verse from N.W.A. The album reached number 14 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and its singles "Murder Rap" and "Untouchable" both hit number one on the Hot Rap Songs chart. Above the Law's sound mixed funk-heavy West Coast beats with gangsta-rap storytelling, and Cold 187um is often credited by fans and critics as a key architect of the G-funk style Dr. Dre later popularized. Later albums included Black Mafia Life (1993) and Uncle Sam's Curse (1994), the latter featuring the single "Black Superman" with vocalist Kokane. KMG the Illustrator died in 2012.
