History
Too $hort (Todd Anthony Shaw, born April 28, 1966, in Los Angeles) moved to Oakland, California in 1980 and became one of the founding figures of West Coast hip-hop, working across gangsta rap, dirty rap, and G-funk. He started recording in 1983 and, with high-school friend Freddy B, sold homemade cassette tracks locally before releasing his debut album, "Don't Stop Rappin'" (1985), on the Oakland label 75 Girls. His 1987 album "Born to Mack" reportedly sold about 50,000 copies out of his car trunk, prompting a reissue by Jive Records. "Life Is... Too Short" (1989) went double platinum, and "Short Dog's in the House" (1990) produced his biggest hit, "The Ghetto." In 1988 he formed the Oakland collective The Dangerous Crew, and in 2020 he joined Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, and E-40 in the group Mt. Westmore. A notable trivia point: he is among the few artists to have collaborated with both Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G. at the peaks of their careers.
