History
Apollo 440 is an English electronic act formed in Liverpool in 1990-91 by brothers Trevor and Howard Gray with schoolmate Noko (Norman Fisher-Jones); James Gardner, an early fourth member, left in 1993 to focus on composition. The name nods to both the Greek god Apollo and the concert-pitch A440, with a wink at the Sequential Circuits Studio 440 sampler. After moving to London, the group self-released its debut album, Millennium Fever, in 1994 on their own Stealth Sonic Recordings. Their sound fused breakbeat and big beat with hard rock, big-band jazz, hip-hop and dub, often built around bold samples: "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Dub" (sampling Van Halen) and "Krupa" (sampling big-band drummer Gene Krupa) both reached the UK Top 10 in 1997, part of an eleven-single UK Top 40 run. Before recording under their own name, they remixed tracks for U2, EMF and Shabba Ranks as the Stealthsonic Orchestra, and later scored music for video games including Gran Turismo 4 and Forza Motorsport 2.
