History

A British electronic trio formed at the end of the 1980s around Jon Fugler, Mike Bryant and Mike Tournier, and for the next decade it stayed slightly out of step with whichever scene was current. The run of records goes from the early singles through Six Wheels on My Wagon (1993) and Oto (1995) to Risotto (1997), which collects "Atom Bomb" and "Absurd". Both tracks work the same way: a long, patient build over a hard breakbeat, a bassline that keeps mutating instead of looping, and a voice used as one more rhythmic part rather than a melody. Games and film did more for their reach than radio ever did. Wipeout carried the music to a generation of players, and they wrote "Zion" for The Matrix Reloaded soundtrack. Set against the Chemical Brothers, Fluke is drier and less rock-facing, closer to a techno producer's sense of arrangement with a breakbeat underneath.
