History
BT, born Brian Wayne Transeau on October 4, 1971, in Rockville, Maryland, is an American musician, DJ, producer, and composer widely credited as a pioneer of trance and intelligent dance music who helped pave the way for EDM. A classically trained pianist from age four, he studied at the Washington Conservatory of Music and briefly at Berklee College of Music before moving to Los Angeles, then back to Maryland, where he co-founded Deep Dish Records with Ali "Dubfire" Shirazinia and Sharam Tayebi. His 1995 debut album Ima, released on Paul Oakenfold's Perfecto Records, launched his career after Sasha championed his tracks in UK clubs. Follow-ups ESCM and Movement in Still Life expanded into breakbeat, drum and bass, and pop, and he went on to score films including The Fast and the Furious and Monster's Ball. BT holds patents for a production technique he calls "stutter editing," and entered the Guinness Book of World Records for his song "Somnambulist (Simply Being Loved)," which used a record 6,178 vocal edits. He has collaborated with artists ranging from Paul van Dyk and Peter Gabriel to David Bowie, Sting, and Tori Amos, and received a Grammy nomination for These Hopeful Machines.
