History
Freeland is the recording name of British DJ and producer Adam Freeland, a key figure in the UK breakbeat scene who emerged from Brighton, England, in the mid-1990s. Alongside Rennie Pilgrem and DJ Tayo, he helped coin the term "nu-skool breaks" at their London club night Friction, fusing breakbeats, techno, and big-beat energy. Freeland debuted with the mix album Coastal Breaks, Vol. 1 (1996) and the acclaimed Tectonics (2000) before releasing his first solo studio album, Now & Them (2003), on his own label, Marine Parade. Its lead single, "We Want Your Soul," a satirical attack on consumer culture built around a sample of comedian Bill Hicks, reached number 35 on the UK Singles Chart. His second album, Cope (2009), was recorded as a full band with vocalist/bassist Kurt Baumann and featured guest musicians Joey Santiago of Pixies, Jerry Casale of Devo, and Tommy Lee of Motley Crue. Freeland also signed acts including Evil Nine to Marine Parade before stepping back from touring in 2011.
