History

Anthony Rother makes electro in the German machine tradition: robotic, repetitive beats, vocoder vocals and lyrics about the relationship between people and technology, often pushed onto a straight four-on-the-floor pulse. Based in Offenbach am Main near Frankfurt, he draws on Italo dance, synthpop and Detroit electro as much as on Kraftwerk's example. Sex With the Machines (1997) set out his themes early and made him one of the central names in the late-1990s electro revival. Simulationszeitalter (2000) and Hacker (2002) kept the cold, rigid sound, while Popkiller (2004) leaned further toward song structures and synthpop hooks. He also worked with Frankfurt techno figures such as Sven Väth and remixed Miss Kittin & The Hacker. His labels, PSI49NET first and later Datapunk, gave the style a steady home. Rother's tracks are marked by stiff, metallic drum programming, squelching analog bass, a vocoded voice delivering short, deadpan phrases and a mood that is both danceable and strangely clinical.
