History
Basement Jaxx are an English electronic music duo formed in Brixton, South London, in 1994 by Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe, who bonded over a shared love of New York house music. They took their name from a club night they ran in south London and launched their own label, Atlantic Jaxx Records, that same year. Their sound fused house with UK garage, ragga, Latin jazz and R&B, built around an ever-changing cast of guest vocalists rather than a fixed lineup. Breakthrough albums Remedy (1999) and Rooty (2001) produced UK Top 10 hits including "Red Alert," "Rendez-Vu," "Romeo" and "Where's Your Head At" (built on Gary Numan samples), which also featured on the Tomb Raider film soundtrack. The duo won Best Dance Act at the Brit Awards in both 2002 and 2004, and their 2003 album Kish Kash, featuring Siouxsie Sioux and Dizzee Rascal, was nominated for the Mercury Prize. They have also remixed tracks for artists including Missy Elliott and Justin Timberlake.
