History
Lo Fidelity Allstars formed in Leeds, England, in mid-1996, built around turntablist Matt Harvey ("Albino Priest") and singer Phil Ward ("Wrekked Train"), who were soon joined by bassist Andy Dickinson, keyboardist Martin Whiteman, and drummer Johnny Machin. After relocating via London, they were signed to Brighton's Skint Records by Damian Harris and released three singles in 1997 - "Kool Roc Bass," "Disco Machine Gun," and "Vision Incision" - right as the UK's big beat scene, led by labelmate Fatboy Slim, was peaking. Their debut album, How to Operate with a Blown Mind (1998), fused big beat, dub-heavy basslines, and dance-punk grit. A curious chart quirk: their single "Battle Flag," featuring Pigeonhed, barely dented the UK top 40 but climbed to No. 6 on the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. The live mix album On the Floor at the Boutique - Volume 2 (2000) and second studio LP Don't Be Afraid of Love (2002) followed before the band's activity slowed.
