History
Adele writes in a plain, direct register and sings it with a large, slightly grainy contralto that stays conversational until the chorus asks for weight. She came out of north London and the British performing arts school system, and her first album, titled with her age as all of them are, set the pattern: piano or acoustic guitar, a small amount of production, a lyric about one specific person in one specific room. The record called 21 turned that pattern into one of the best selling albums of the century, adding gospel sized drums to Rolling in the Deep and then stripping everything away again for Someone Like You, a single voice and a piano that filled stadiums anyway. Later work widened the frame, and Hello opens on the same held, husky low note that has become her signature. She tours rarely, records slowly and has spoken openly about the strain the voice takes. A listener recognises her by the catch at the end of a line and by the habit of singing slightly behind the beat.
