History
Sam Smith first reached listeners as the voice on other people's records, on Disclosure's Latch and on a house-pop hit that was everywhere before anyone attached a face to the singing. The voice is the point: a high, gospel-schooled instrument that can hold a note thin and almost unsupported, then open up without turning into a shout. In the Lonely Hour set the template of a soul ballad over modern pop production, and Stay with Me, with a choir behind the chorus, took that template to the top of the charts and to four Grammys in 2015. Later work moved around more, into disco, into a Bond theme, into the harder and campier register of Unholy. The writing stays in one emotional area, unrequited love and what is left afterwards, handled with very little irony. Since 2019 Sam Smith has spoken openly about being non-binary and uses they and them. What listeners recognise is the top of the range, where the voice thins to almost nothing and holds.
