History

Gladys Knight sings with a grain in the voice that most soul singers spend a career trying to acquire. It sits low for a woman's voice, closer to contralto than to the high gospel soprano, and it carries a slight rasp at full volume that makes a held note sound worn in rather than strained. She started young in Atlanta church singing and talent contests, and the gospel training shows less in decoration than in timing: she holds back the front of a phrase, then lands the important word squarely. Her defining records are narrative rather than showy, songs about leaving, staying and settling for less, delivered as if the story had already happened to her. "Midnight Train to Georgia" is the clearest example, a piece of plain storytelling sung without a single unnecessary run. Later work moved between soul, adult pop and a James Bond theme, and the voice aged well because it never depended on range. Warmth, restraint and clear diction are what a listener recognises.
