History

Emeli Sandé sings soul with the diction of a writer who built the song before she stepped up to the microphone. Raised in the north east of Scotland, she was studying medicine in Glasgow while placing songs with other performers, and the writing habit shows: her own records are structured around a plain, repeated line that carries the whole chorus, delivered in a full, unhurried alto that resists melisma. The arrangements lean on piano and choir rather than on club production, which put her slightly outside the British pop of the early 2010s even as she sold more than anyone else in it. Our Version of Events was the United Kingdom's best selling album of 2012, and her appearances at both the opening and closing ceremonies of the London Olympics that summer fixed the voice in public memory. A listener recognises the hymn like build of her choruses, the deliberate consonants, and the habit of writing about grief and endurance in language simple enough to be sung by a crowd. The album took the Brit Award for British Album in 2013.
