History
Plugg is a trap offshoot that took shape in the mid-2010s on SoundCloud, around the Atlanta production collective Beatpluggz and its producers MexikoDro and StoopidXool. The name comes straight from their producer tag, a shouted Plug! they stamped onto their beats. The sound starts from Zaytoven's sparse, swinging drums and draws on Gucci Mane, Project Pat and, oddly, the Paper Mario video game soundtrack, with OutKast among the older Southern roots: deep 808s instead of kick drums, muffled low-passed claps, crash cymbals and very few hi-hats, under layered synth and xylophone melodies that borrow from retro Nintendo sounds. Beats come fast; MexikoDro has said he spends about 15 minutes on one. From around 2014 rappers pulled it into the open: Playboi Carti broke through with Broke Boi, Rich the Kid released Plug with Carti and Kodak Black, Lil Yachty recorded Hella O's, and Nebu Kiniza's platinum Gassed Up was built on the Plug beat. That first wave faded quickly, but the style survived underground, spun off pluggnb and crossed to Russia, where Face started making it in 2015 with tracks produced by MexikoDro and Big Baby Tape released the all-plugg EP Hoodrich Tales in 2018.
