Phonk

Phonk from the 2010s: cowbell melody, distorted sub bass, chopped vocal sample, menacing and swaggering in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.

History

Phonk, a hip-hop offshoot, took shape in the United States in the early 2010s, built on the dark sound of 1990s Memphis rap. Producers pair Memphis-style vocals and early-90s hip-hop samples with jazz and funk, then slow it all down with the chopped and screwed technique of Houston's DJ Screw; Three 6 Mafia and Tommy Wright III sit at its root. The word came from SpaceGhostPurrp, who used it in tracks like Pheel tha Phonk and on his 2012 album Mysterious Phonk, explaining that phonk was slang for funk. His Raider Klan, Denzel Curry among them, helped revive the Memphis aesthetic. Rather than a city, phonk lived on SoundCloud, where #phonk ranked among the most trending hashtags every year from 2016 to 2018. In the late 2010s Russian producers turned it into drift phonk, faster, heavy on bass and TR-808 cowbell; after TikTok took it up in 2020, that version became what most people mean by phonk. Spotify's official phonk playlist from May 2021 was almost all drift phonk, and Kordhell's Murder in My Mind made him the first phonk producer in the platform's top 500 artists. Outside Brazil, funk automotivo often goes by the same name.
