History

DJ Smokey makes phonk in its hazy, underground internet form: slowed and warped Memphis-style vocal samples, rattling 808s, cowbells and murky, lo-fi mixes that feel recorded at the bottom of a codeine cup. A Canadian producer, he built his following on SoundCloud and YouTube in the early 2010s, working in FL Studio and moving between phonk, cloud rap and trap. His 2013 mixtape Evil Wayz is regarded as a cult classic of the SoundCloud phonk era, and its intro track is often described as the piece that introduced him. Around that time he worked with many rappers from the same online underground. After a break from music later in the decade, he returned around 2020, and from 2022 his absurd, satirical producer tags spread as memes far beyond the phonk scene, including the "Shadow Wizard Money Gang" tag tied to the collective of that name. Releases such as Smoked Out Dance Party and Nuked Out Dance Party continue the style. He is instantly identified by his tags and that smoky, distorted low end.
