History

Soudiere is a French producer working in the underground phonk scene that grew online in the 2010s, where Memphis rap tapes of the 1990s were revived through Bandcamp and SoundCloud rather than record shops. The sound in this lane is built from slowed, hazy loops, rattling hi-hats, heavy 808 bass and chopped vocal fragments, recorded with deliberate murk so it feels closer to a dubbed cassette than a studio master. Soudiere's releases come out largely as numbered series, above all the Pirelli volumes and the Game Is Tight projects, each of them returning with new instalments. Much of the catalogue is collaborative: joint tapes with Lil Xelly, WiFiGawd, DJ Smokey and DJ Yung Vamp show how this scene works as a network of small producers trading beats and features across borders. It is music made for the Bandcamp crowd rather than the charts. A listener would recognise the work by its steady, looping grooves, its dark and smoky texture and the Memphis cadences sitting inside it.
