Style recipe for Suno v5
Drift Phonk
Drift phonk from the 2020s: screaming cowbell, distorted sub bass, phonk hi-hats, aggressive and menacing in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.
History
Drift phonk split off from phonk in Russia in the late 2010s. The parent style came from the American underground of the early 2010s: SpaceGhostPurrp coined the name, explaining that phonk is slang for funk, and his Raider Klan circle, Denzel Curry among them, revived the Memphis rap sound, drawing on Three 6 Mafia and the chopped and screwed production of DJ Screw. The drift variant kept the vocal samples but pushed everything harder: faster tempos, loud TR-808 cowbell patterns, heavy bass and distortion that often leaves the sampled words unrecognizable. Kaito Shoma's Scary Garry, released in 2016, is counted among the first tracks. The tracks are short and energetic, so they ended up under videos of drifting, street racing, weightlifting, fight sports, football and anime, and in 2020 TikTok turned the sound into a wave. It grew so big that it overtook the original genre and took over the word itself: the official phonk playlist Spotify launched in May 2021 was almost entirely drift phonk. Kordhell, with Murder in My Mind, became the first phonk producer to enter Spotify's top 500 artists. By the mid-2020s the Brazilian funk automotivo was being filed under phonk too.
