History
Hensonn makes the cowbell-driven strain of phonk that took over short-form video in the early 2020s: a pitched, melodic cowbell riff carrying the tune, heavy distorted 808s underneath and a clipped vocal chop punching through. He is a Ukrainian producer, one of several from Ukraine and Russia who turned an American Memphis-rap offshoot into something closer to club music. His breakthrough was "Sahara", released in late 2021, which spread through TikTok and car-edit videos and became one of the most streamed tracks the phonk wave produced. It was followed by a steady run of singles in the same mould, among them "Strange" and "Flare", plus the slowed and sped-up versions that the genre's audience expects. The appeal is directness. A Hensonn track states its hook in the first seconds, loops it with small variations and leans on the low end rather than on the dusty samples of older phonk. Listeners know him by that bright, almost tropical cowbell melody set against a bass line pushed into distortion.
