History

DVRST is the Russian producer behind Close Eyes, the track that carried drift phonk out of niche playlists and into the mainstream. The project belongs to the wave of Russian and Eastern European producers who reshaped phonk at the turn of the 2020s, taking the Memphis rap samples and cowbells of the older style and pushing them into a harder, faster, club-ready form. Close Eyes came out in 2021 and spread through TikTok, where it soundtracked the Titan Glow Up meme and endless variations of glow-up videos. It went on to hundreds of millions of streams and is often credited with opening the drift phonk era that followed, when dozens of producers chased the same sound. Dream Space, from the same year, stayed close to the formula. A DVRST track is recognised by a hammering, distorted cowbell melody, a thumping four-on-the-floor or bouncing house-leaning beat, heavy sub-bass and chopped vocal fragments. The sound is tied closely to car-drift edits and short-form video, where a few seconds of cowbell are enough to set the mood.
