History
$werve is a London producer from the fast, distorted end of phonk, the strand usually tagged aggressive, drift or gym phonk. The style keeps the Memphis rap DNA that phonk grew from, the cowbell melodies and chopped vocal samples, but pushes it toward heavy, clipping 808s, pounding tempos and blown-out mixes built for car videos and workout clips. His name spread through collaborations in the scene's crowded online network, most visibly HELLDRIFT 2 with HXI and HXELLPLAYA, which circulated widely on TikTok and streaming playlists in 2022. He has also worked the Brazilian side of the genre, where phonk collides with funk carioca and its rattling tamborzão beats, a crossover that became one of the dominant phonk sounds of the early 2020s. Like most producers in this world, he is known almost entirely through tracks and short-form video rather than interviews or a public persona. A listener would recognise the style by the relentless cowbell riffs, the stuttering vocal chops and drops that hit like a wall of distortion.
