History

Kaito Shoma is a Russian phonk producer whose "Scary Garry" became one of the defining tracks of the drift phonk boom. The piece is built on a cut-up vocal lifted from old Memphis rap, set over a hard cowbell pattern and a rumbling, overdriven bass. It had been around on SoundCloud for years before the car-video and TikTok wave of 2021 pushed it to a mass audience, and Kaito Shoma has described it as the first drift phonk song. Whether or not that claim holds, the track shows the moment the style shifted: the lo-fi haze and cassette hiss of earlier phonk give way to something louder, faster and made for night driving footage. Other tracks from the same period, such as "Hotline" and "GAZ", keep the formula of a menacing vocal loop, cowbell hits and distorted low end. His sound is darker and more chaotic than the melodic cowbell phonk that followed, and it is recognised by that eerie, horror-tinged mood.
