History
SpaceGhostPurrp built his sound from the murk of 1990s Memphis tapes: pitched and blurred vocal samples, cavernous 808s, cheap drum-machine snares and a hissing, occult mood that made his beats sound like they were recorded underwater. He came out of Carol City in Miami and founded the Raider Klan collective, an early home for Denzel Curry among others. His 2011 mixtape Blackland Radio 66.6 spread fast online and helped put the word phonk into circulation for this lo-fi, Memphis-rooted style, which is why his name comes up in almost every account of the genre's origins. Around the same time he produced for A$AP Rocky's early mixtape work, carrying the hazy sound into a much bigger audience. In 2012 the British label 4AD released Mysterious Phonk: Chronicles of SpaceGhostPurrp, a compilation of his material that brought the underground aesthetic to indie listeners. Later tapes such as IntoXXXicated stayed in the same dark lane. He is recognisable by the smeared samples, slow menacing tempos and his low, half-mumbled flow.
