History

Lil Ugly Mane is the best-known alias of Travis Miller, a producer and rapper from Richmond, Virginia, whose early work revived the sound of 1990s Memphis tape rap for the internet era. Mista Thug Isolation, released in 2012, pairs slow, hissing drum machines, pitched-down vocal samples and cowbells with lyrics that swing between gleeful shock, absurd humour and real bleakness. It spread through blogs and file-sharing and became one of the reference records for the wave that grew into modern phonk. Miller also made instrumental and experimental music under other names, including noise and heavier projects, and that restlessness shows in how he treats rap as raw material rather than a fixed format. Oblivion Access, from 2015, is darker and more fractured, closer to collage than to a set of songs. He declared the project finished more than once and later returned with a more sprawling, guitar-heavy style. A listener recognises the Lil Ugly Mane sound by its murky, degraded Memphis-style beats, heavy sampling and a voice that shifts from menacing to self-mocking within a verse.
