History

DJ Yung Vamp makes phonk that leans toward the smooth and nostalgic rather than the aggressive: slow jazz and soul samples, pitched Southern rap vocals and simple, knocking drums that sound built for late-night driving. Born in Liège, Belgium, and later based in Brussels, he draws on 1990s and 2000s hip-hop, especially Memphis rap and crunk, and his production is deliberately stripped back compared with many peers. He describes his sound as nostalgic and relaxing at the same time. His breakthrough came in 2016 with "I GOT MOLLY I GOT WHITE", which spread through YouTube channels that promoted the emerging phonk wave, and in 2018 he joined the phonk collective Purple Posse. His catalogue is organised around long-running series, including Night off the Trill and Die Trill, and I Need More Blood later got a sequel. Over time he has collaborated with better-known rappers from outside the scene, which helped carry the style to a wider audience. Listeners recognise him by mellow, looped samples, a hazy mood and vocals that drift rather than hit.
