History
Vulfpeck is an American funk-soul band and musical collective formed in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 2011. Its core members, bandleader Jack Stratton, Theo Katzman, Woody Goss, and bassist Joe Dart, met at the University of Michigan School of Music; touring partners Cory Wong, Antwaun Stanley, and Joey Dosik joined later. The band builds a minimal, groove-first sound recorded live with real instruments, modeled on 1960s session-musician traditions like the Funk Brothers and the Wrecking Crew. Studio albums include Thrill of the Arts (2015), The Beautiful Game (2016, featuring "Dean Town"), Mr Finish Line (2017, with Bootsy Collins and James Gadson), and Schvitz (2022). Vulfpeck is best known for a striking stunt: in 2014 it released Sleepify, a completely silent ten-track album on Spotify, which earned roughly $20,000 in royalties before removal and funded an admission-free tour. In 2019 the band sold out Madison Square Garden without a manager or record label, a rare feat it repeated with a second MSG show in 2025.
