History
Chromeo is a Canadian electro-funk duo from Montreal, formed in 2002 by David "Dave 1" Macklovitch (guitar, lead vocals) and Patrick "P-Thugg" Gemayel (keyboards, synthesizers, talk box). The two met as teenagers at Montreal's Collège Stanislas and later joked that they were "the only successful Arab/Jewish partnership since the dawn of human culture." Their sound blends 1980s-style synth-funk, soul, disco and synth-pop, and critics often compared them to Hall & Oates, Zapp and Prince. Their 2004 debut, She's in Control, produced the club hit "Needy Girl," and the duo went on to release six studio albums, including Fancy Footwork (2007), Business Casual (2010), White Women (2014), Head Over Heels (2018) and Adult Contemporary (2024), three of which charted on the Billboard 200. Head Over Heels earned Chromeo its first Grammy nomination in 2019. In an odd bit of trivia, a newly described Early Cretaceous fossil bird species was named Chromeornis funkyi in the band's honor in 2025.
