History
UNKLE started in London in 1992 as a loose production alias for James Lavelle, founder of the Mo' Wax label, working alongside Tim Goldsworthy and members of the Japanese hip-hop crew Major Force. The project reinvented itself in 1997 when Lavelle recruited DJ Shadow to build a debut album from scratch: Psyence Fiction (1998), a trip-hop and alternative-rock record built entirely around guest vocalists, including Thom Yorke of Radiohead, Mark Hollis of Talk Talk, Mike D of the Beastie Boys, and Richard Ashcroft of the Verve. Shadow left after the tour, and Lavelle has remained the group's only constant member since, rebuilding the lineup around a rotating cast of collaborators for each record: Ian Brown and Josh Homme on Never, Never, Land (2003), Josh Homme and Ian Astbury on War Stories (2007), and Mark Lanegan and Nick Cave on Where Did the Night Fall (2010). Later albums, The Road: Part I and Part II (2017, 2019), continued the pattern, and a 2018 track with Michael Kiwanuka appeared on the Roma film soundtrack. UNKLE's music has been widely licensed to film, TV, and video games, including trailers for Assassin's Creed and The Bourne Ultimatum.
