History
Slade formed in Wolverhampton, in England's Black Country, coming together by 1966 as 'N Betweens before Philips Records renamed them Ambrose Slade in 1969 and, soon after, simply Slade. The classic lineup - Noddy Holder (vocals, guitar), Jim Lea (bass, violin), Dave Hill (guitar) and Don Powell (drums) - became one of the defining acts of the early-1970s glam rock explosion, known for stomping riffs, terrace-chant choruses and deliberately misspelled song titles like "Cum On Feel the Noize." Between 1971 and 1976 they landed 17 consecutive UK top 20 singles, six of them number ones, and three number one albums; British Hit Singles & Albums later named them the best-selling British singles act of the 1970s. Their 1973 single "Merry Xmas Everybody" has sold over a million copies and remains a UK festive-season radio staple. After a mid-70s slump, an unplanned last-minute booking at the 1980 Reading Festival, filling in for Ozzy Osbourne, relaunched their career. Slade split in 1992, though Hill and Powell later continued performing under the Slade name.
