History
T. Rex, originally Tyrannosaurus Rex, was an English rock band formed in London in July 1967 by singer-songwriter and guitarist Marc Bolan, its only constant member. The group began as an acoustic psychedelic-folk duo with percussionist Steve Peregrin Took, later Mickey Finn, before Bolan pushed the sound toward electric rock around 1970, shortened the name to T. Rex, and helped ignite the glam rock movement with the hit "Ride a White Swan." Between 1970 and 1973 the band scored eleven UK top 10 singles, four of them number 1: "Hot Love," "Get It On," "Telegram Sam" and "Metal Guru." Their 1971 album Electric Warrior became a glam rock landmark, and 1972's The Slider was their biggest US success. "Get It On" was also their only US hit, retitled "Bang a Gong (Get It On)" there. Bolan died in a car crash on 16 September 1977, aged 29, when his girlfriend Gloria Jones crashed his purple Mini into a tree in London; the band disbanded soon after. T. Rex was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020.
