History
The Sweet formed in London in 1968, first performing as The Sweetshop, before breaking through in 1971 with the bubblegum single "Funny, Funny" and the number-two hit "Co-Co". Teaming with songwriter-producers Nicky Chinn, Mike Chapman and Phil Wainman, the classic line-up of singer Brian Connolly, bassist Steve Priest, guitarist Andy Scott and drummer Mick Tucker became one of the defining acts of British glam rock, mixing hard rock riffs with high-pitched harmony vocals and outrageous stage costumes. Between 1971 and 1978 they racked up thirteen UK Top-20 hits, including the chart-topper "Block Buster!" (1973) and number-two singles "Hell Raiser", "The Ballroom Blitz", "Teenage Rampage" and "Fox on the Run", while also breaking into the US Top 10 with "Little Willy", "The Ballroom Blitz" and "Love Is Like Oxygen". The band has sold over 35 million albums worldwide. Connolly departed in 1979 and the group split in 1981; Connolly died in 1997, Tucker in 2002 and Priest in 2020, while Andy Scott continues to tour with his own version of the band.
