History
Queen are a British rock band formed in London in 1970 by Freddie Mercury (lead vocals, piano), Brian May (guitar, vocals), and Roger Taylor (drums, vocals); bassist John Deacon joined in February 1971, completing the classic lineup. Their sound moved from progressive and hard rock on the early albums toward more radio-friendly arena rock and pop. After a self-titled 1973 debut, Queen II (1974) gave them their first UK chart success, and Sheer Heart Attack (1974) and A Night at the Opera (1975) brought international fame. A Night at the Opera featured "Bohemian Rhapsody," which topped the UK singles chart for nine weeks and helped establish the music video as a format. News of the World (1977) produced two enduring sports anthems, "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions." Their 1985 Live Aid set is widely ranked among the greatest live performances in rock history. Mercury died in 1991 from AIDS-related complications; the surviving members have toured since 2004 as "Queen +" with guest vocalists. Queen were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001 and have sold an estimated 250-300 million records worldwide.
