History

Pepper plays reggae rock with a Hawaiian island ease and a punk trio's bluntness. The band formed in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii and later moved to San Diego, where it became part of the Southern California scene that grew in Sublime's wake. As a three piece of guitar, bass and drums, Pepper keeps things lean: offbeat guitar chops, round, melodic bass lines that often carry the tune, and shared vocals that switch between easy crooning and shouted choruses. The songs are mostly about summer, parties, love and island life, delivered with humour and a lot of swagger. Kona Town, released in 2002, became the breakthrough, with Give It Up among its best known songs, and In with the Old and No Shame followed through the mid 2000s. Constant touring on the surf and skate circuit built a loyal following. Listeners recognise the band by the bouncy bass, the mix of dub echoes with power chord bursts, laid back island harmonies and the feeling of a backyard party that never quite ends.
