History

Long Beach Dub Allstars rose out of the loss of Sublime. After singer Bradley Nowell died in 1996, bassist Eric Wilson and drummer Bud Gaugh kept playing with friends from the Long Beach scene, and the loose collective that formed became a band of its own. Their music keeps the Sublime mix of reggae, dub, ska, punk and hip hop, but leans harder into roots reggae grooves, echo drenched dub breaks and a sunny, laid back Southern California mood. The debut Right Back, released in 1999, brought them to a wide audience, and Wonders of the World followed in 2001, including the summery single Sunny Hours with will.i.am. Several voices and players rotated through the lineup, which gave the records a jam session looseness. The group split in the early 2000s, with members moving to other projects, and later returned to the stage. Listeners recognise the sound by the rolling bass, skanking guitar, dub delays, toaster style vocals and the loose feel of a Long Beach beach party.
