History

Dirty Heads mix reggae rhythms with hip hop delivery, punk energy and acoustic guitar, a Southern California blend that sounds like a backyard party on the coast. The band was founded in Huntington Beach in 1996 by high school friends Jared Watson and Dustin Bushnell. Bushnell was already playing in a punk band, Watson had no musical experience, and in Bushnell's garage the two started writing hip hop songs with reggae and punk leanings, drawing on Orange County's reggae and ska culture. The name came from their older brothers, who called them dirty heads as kids. After a short stint on a major label ended over artistic differences, they kept their masters and finished the debut Any Port in a Storm, released in 2008. Its single Lay Me Down, featuring Rome of Sublime with Rome, became a number one on US alternative radio and made the band a national touring act. Later records such as Cabin by the Sea and Sound of Change pushed into broader pop and rock. The signature is the trade-off between rapped verses and a sung, singalong hook over a relaxed, beach-town groove.
