History

Common Kings play a sunny island reggae laced with rock guitar and pop hooks, built around the wide-ranging voice of singer Sasualei Maliga, known as Jr. King. The four members have roots in Hawaii, Samoa, Tonga and Fiji and grew up in the Pacific Islander community of Orange County, California, where they met as young men and later formed the band while studying at Orange Coast College. The name is a nod to that heritage and to their homelands. Their 2013 EPs, including Summer Anthems, reached the top ten of the Billboard reggae chart and carried songs like Alcoholic and Wade in Your Water onto Hawaiian radio. Pop acts took notice: the band toured with Bruno Mars and Meghan Trainor, who co-wrote several of their songs, and supported Justin Timberlake in Australia and New Zealand. The debut full-length Lost in Paradise, released in 2017, topped the reggae albums chart and was nominated for the Grammy for Best Reggae Album. The sound is easy to spot: feel-good backbeat, big harmonies and a soaring lead vocal.
