History
Smash Mouth came out of San Jose with a sound assembled from parts that were out of fashion at the time: a fat retro organ, surf-guitar tone, a shuffling beat closer to ska and sixties garage than to the alternative rock around them, and a lead voice with a rasp that sat slightly off the polish of the production. Walkin' on the Sun made the formula work first, riding an organ hook that sounded like it had been lifted from a much older record. All Star sharpened it into something almost mechanically catchy, built on a shouted title line and a lyric that reads as cheerful and a little resigned at once, and it has outlasted the band's chart career by decades through film and internet use. Their cover of I'm a Believer belongs to the same instinct, taking a familiar tune and playing it straight, fast and bright. The band's strength was arrangement economy: nothing lasts longer than it needs to, and the hook always arrives early.
