History

Paul Elstak stands at both ends of Dutch hardcore: he helped set off the hard, distorted Rotterdam gabber sound, and then became the main face of its brighter, faster happy hardcore offshoot. A Rotterdam DJ and producer, he was behind Rotterdam Records in the early 1990s, the label that pushed the city's pounding kick drums and blunt local humour out to the rest of the Netherlands and beyond. As DJ Paul he played and made hardcore for the rave crowd. By the mid 1990s he had turned toward melody, and under his full name released tracks such as "Luv U More" and "Rainbow in the Sky", which set sugary vocals and bouncy piano lines over a fast four to the floor beat and reached a mainstream Dutch audience. That shift divided hardcore fans but opened the door for a whole wave of happy hardcore. In 2001 he started Offensive Records and returned to harder sounds. Listeners recognise his work by the mix of gabber weight and big, singalong hooks that sit right on top of the kick.
