History

Klubbheads made hard, bouncy club records built for the dancefloor rather than the radio: pounding kick drums, stabbing synth hooks, chopped vocal shouts and a relentless, pumping bassline. The team came out of the Netherlands, with producers Koen Groeneveld and Addy van der Zwan at the core and Jan Voermans among the founders, and they ran their own labels, starting with Blue Records in the mid-1990s. "Klubbhopping" crossed over in 1996 and reached the UK top ten, followed by "Discohopping" and "Kickin' Hard". Those records found a second home in the clubs of Liverpool and the north-west of England, where the bouncy, bass-heavy sound that became known as scouse house leaned hard on this kind of Dutch hard house. The group was prolific, releasing under dozens of aliases and moving between hard house, trance, eurodance, jumpstyle and more. A listener recognises a Klubbheads record by its cheeky, hands-in-the-air energy, its simple chant-like hooks and a groove that never lets up for a second.
