History
Rotterdam Termination Source are remembered for one idea taken to its limit: "Poing", a 1992 gabber track that runs almost entirely on a pounding kick drum and a single rubbery, bouncing "poing" sound. Made by Maurice Steenbergen and Danny Scholte and released on Rotterdam Records, the track was minimal to the point of provocation, yet it became a hit at home and reached the UK top 30, carrying Rotterdam hardcore into the mainstream at a time when most of the scene still lived in clubs and warehouses. The English football chant "Boing Boing" of West Bromwich Albion fans is reportedly based on it. The group followed with "Merry X-Mess" in 1993, a hardcore take on Christmas tunes that also charted in Britain. Steenbergen later kept the name going into the 2000s. Listeners recognise the group by that stripped down, almost cartoonish approach: very few sounds, huge distortion and a hook that anyone can shout back.
