History

Paul Elstak is one of the central figures of Dutch gabber and the man most associated with its brighter offshoot, happy hardcore. Active as a DJ since the late 1980s, he came up in the Netherlands as the hard, pounding early hardcore sound took hold around Rotterdam, and for years he played the heaviest end of it. In the mid 1990s he turned to a faster, euphoric style: distorted kicks kept at full speed, but topped with bright piano riffs, uplifting synth melodies and high, sped-up vocals. Rainbow in the Sky in 1995 became his signature, and together with Luv U More and The Promised Land it brought hardcore to a far wider Dutch audience. For the harder gabber material he often appeared as DJ Paul, and he was also part of Rotterdam Terror Corps. That contrast runs through his whole catalogue: the same thundering kick can carry either a gabber assault or a song a whole room sings along to. He is recognised by kick drums that hit hard under melodies that sound like pure joy.
