History

Derrick Carter built his name first as a DJ: long, loose sets rooted in 1970s black music, where old disco, soul and jazz slide into jacking Chicago house and the next turn is never obvious. Born in 1969, he made Chicago his base and was already playing records at parties there in the early 1980s. A job at the Imports Etc. record shop put him in the middle of the city's early house scene. As Symbols & Instruments, with Mark Farina and Chris Nazuka, he released the "Mood" EP in 1988, a record that found a devoted audience in England's ambient techno circles. In the mid-1990s he co-founded the label Classic with Luke Solomon, known for a catalogue that counted down from 100 instead of up, and it became a home for playful, swinging house. His own records share the humour of his sets: chopped disco samples, shuffling drums and filtered loops. His influence on DJs in Britain and Europe is wide.
