History

Oval began in Germany in the early 1990s as a trio of Markus Popp, Sebastian Oschatz and Frank Metzger, and became Popp's solo project after the first records. Their method was physical and slightly vandalistic: they marked the playing surface of compact discs with paint and tape so the player would stumble, then recorded the stutters, gaps and frozen fragments that came out and arranged them into pieces. Systemisch appeared in 1994 and 94diskont in 1995, both on Mille Plateaux, and the long track that opens 94diskont is the one usually cited as the founding document of glitch. The point was not noise for its own sake. What the damaged discs produced were soft, looping tones with a pulse of errors running through them, closer to ambient music than to anything harsh, and a generation of producers took the error as a usable sound rather than a fault to be fixed. Popp later moved the work into custom software with Ovalprocess.
