History
Múm is an Icelandic indietronica band formed in Reykjavík in 1997 by Gunnar Örn Tynes and Örvar Þóreyjarson Smárason, soon joined by twin sisters Gyða and Kristín Anna Valtýsdóttir. Their sound blends soft, often wordless vocals with glitchy electronic beats and a rotating cast of traditional and unconventional instruments, spanning folktronica, ambient pop, and post-rock. The 1999 debut Yesterday Was Dramatic – Today Is OK built a cult following, but 2002's Finally We Are No One, released on FatCat Records, became their international breakthrough. Both Valtýsdóttir sisters had left by 2006, and the band regrouped around Tynes and Smárason with a larger ensemble, including cellist Hildur Guðnadóttir, for albums like Go Go Smear the Poison Ivy (2007) and Sing Along to Songs You Don't Know (2009). Múm remains active, releasing History of Silence in 2025, its first record in twelve years. Two standout trivia notes: in 2013 the band recorded a little-known collaboration with Kylie Minogue, "Whistle," and alumna Hildur Guðnadóttir went on to become the first Icelander to win an Academy Award, for her Joker score.
