History
Taylor Deupree is an American sound artist, composer and photographer best known as the founder of 12k, the label that became a home for lowercase, microsound and quiet ambient music. He began in the 1990s making techno and experimental electronic records in New York, then moved steadily toward softer, more minimal work built from small digital details. In the early 2000s his music was often made of tiny glitches, clicks and fragile tones, but later albums such as January, Northern and Faint turned warmer, bringing in acoustic guitar, piano, field recordings, tape and old or broken equipment. Imperfection became part of the method: hiss, dropouts and wavering pitch are treated as material, not faults. He has collaborated widely with artists in the same circle, including Richard Chartier, and 12k's releases share a recognisable care for space and restraint that reflects his own taste. His pieces are known by their hushed dynamics, slow drifting loops, delicate high frequencies and a feeling of weather and landscape, calm and a little melancholy.
