History

Netsky took the bright, melodic end of drum and bass and made it a main-stage sound. Working from Belgium rather than from the London scene that invented the genre, he built tracks on rolling breakbeats, warm sub bass and chord progressions closer to soul or house than to the darker side of jungle. That liquid approach had existed for years, but his records pushed the melodies so far forward that they carry the track outright, which is what moved him from club rooms into European festival headline slots. Later work opened further toward pop: vocal features, shorter arrangements, tempos stepping outside the usual 174 beats per minute. "Rio" is the clearest example of that crossover, while "Come Alive" keeps the older formula of a euphoric break and a chorus arriving on the second drop. He also built a live band show around the material, playing the parts rather than mixing them. Listeners recognise him by the warmth, the bright top end, and drums that roll rather than punch.
